Vastu Shastra is taken seriously by the vast majority of homeowners in Chennai and Coimbatore — and rightly so. When incorporated thoughtfully from the design stage, Vastu principles often align with good architectural practice: maximising natural light, ensuring good ventilation, and creating a logical flow through the home. Here's a practical, actionable guide.
The Most Important Vastu Principle: Get the Plot Right First
Vastu assessment starts before construction — at the plot selection stage. Ideal plot characteristics:
- Shape: Square or rectangular plots are considered most auspicious. Avoid triangular, L-shaped, or irregularly shaped plots
- Slope: Plot sloping towards North or East is preferred — allows water to flow away from the building in the right direction
- Road-facing direction: East-facing or North-facing plots are traditionally preferred for residential use
- Extensions: Northeast extensions (corner cuts toward NE) are considered very positive
Main Door Direction — The Most Common Vastu Question
The main entrance direction depends on your plot's road-facing direction:
| Plot Faces | Best Main Door Position | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| East | Northeast quadrant of east wall | Southeast corner |
| North | Northwest quadrant of north wall | Northeast corner exactly |
| West | Northwest quadrant of west wall | Southwest corner |
| South | Southeast quadrant of south wall | Southwest corner |
Practical note: In Chennai and Coimbatore's plotted layouts, the road facing direction is fixed. At Kanish Homes, our architects factor in Vastu orientation during the initial site analysis — not as an afterthought.
Kitchen Placement
The kitchen is one of the most Vastu-sensitive zones in a home:
- Best location: Southeast corner of the house (fire element zone)
- Cooking direction: The cook should ideally face East while cooking
- Acceptable alternative: Northwest kitchen with cook facing North
- Avoid: Kitchen directly opposite main door, or kitchen in Northeast or Southwest
- Sink placement: Northeast side of kitchen (water element)
- Gas stove: Southeast side, never directly under a window or beam
Master Bedroom
- Best location: Southwest corner — considered the zone of stability and rest
- Sleeping direction: Head towards South or East while sleeping
- Avoid: Master bedroom in Northeast (this zone is considered sacred/light) or directly above the kitchen
- Attached bathroom: Best on North or West side of the bedroom
- Mirrors: Avoid mirrors facing the bed directly
Children's Rooms
- Best location: West or Northwest of the house
- Study desk facing East or North for concentration
- Avoid Southeast (fire element can cause restlessness)
Living Room
- Best in: North, East, or Northeast — captures morning light and social energy
- Heavy furniture (sofa sets): West or South wall
- TV: Southeast wall (facing Northwest when watching)
- Avoid clutter near the main entrance — the entry zone should feel open and welcoming
Bathrooms & Toilets
- Best locations: Northwest or West of the house
- Acceptable: South or Southeast
- Strictly avoid: Northeast toilet — considered the worst Vastu defect in a home
- Toilet seat direction: facing North or South is preferred, avoid East
Staircase
- Best location: South, West, or Southwest
- Stairs should always go clockwise (ascending from North to South)
- Avoid: Staircase in the exact centre of the home (breaks the Brahmasthan)
- Avoid: Northeast staircase
Pooja Room
- Best location: Northeast corner — the Ishanya zone, considered most sacred
- The deity should face West (worshipper faces East) or face East (worshipper faces West)
- Avoid: Pooja room below staircase, in bedroom, or in bathroom wall-sharing configuration
- Threshold: Have a small threshold (marble or wood) at the pooja room entrance
Colours by Zone
| Room / Zone | Vastu-Recommended Colours |
|---|---|
| Living Room | White, cream, light yellow, pale green |
| Master Bedroom | Earthy tones — beige, cream, light brown |
| Kitchen | Yellow, orange, light red (fire element) |
| Children's Room | Light green, blue — calming and focused |
| Pooja Room | White or cream — pure and serene |
What Kanish Homes Does for Vastu-Compliant Homes
We incorporate Vastu analysis as a standard part of the design process for every home. Before presenting floor plan options, our architects assess the plot's road-facing direction, slope, and existing structure orientation to ensure the design options we present are naturally Vastu-aligned where possible.
For clients who want a detailed Vastu consultation, we coordinate with empanelled Vastu consultants as part of the design phase — before a single drawing is finalised.
